August 2026: Candle care and getting the most from your Witch City Wicks candles

As summer begins its slow transition toward fall, now is the best time to let everyone know how to get the most out of their soy wax candles.

After more than fifteen years of hand-pouring soy candles in Salem, we've learned that proper candle care makes all the difference. A well-maintained candle not only burns longer, but also performs better, smells stronger, and creates a safer experience overall.

Whether you're new to burning our candles or you've been collecting them for years, a few simple habits can dramatically improve the life of your candles.

How to burn a soy wax candle correctly: Why the first burn matters
The first time you light a candle is the most important one.  During the first burn, the candle begins establishing the melt pool that will guide future burns, giving your soy wax candle a “memory”. For best results, allow the wax to melt completely across the surface of the candle, from edge to edge, before extinguishing it. Depending on the candle size, this may take several hours.

Extinguishing a candle too early can cause tunneling, where wax remains around the edges while the candle continues burning straight down the center. A full melt pool helps ensure an even burn from beginning to end.

(a note from Liz: this might be an unpopular opinion, but I leave my wick long on the first burn of my candles. Trimming your wick too short on the first lighting of your new candle will increase the chances of tunneling)

Trim your wick before every burn
One of the simplest ways to improve candle performance is trimming the wick before lighting. We recommend trimming to approximately 1/4 inch before each burn.

A properly trimmed wick helps:
    •    Reduce soot and mushrooming (the carbon buildup from the top of the wick)
    •    Prevent excessive flickering
    •    Promote a cleaner burn
    •    Extend the life of your candle
    •    Improve scent throw
A wick trimmer makes this easy, but scissors or even nail clippers can also work when used carefully.

How long should you burn a candle?
For most soy candles, the ideal burn time is between 2–4 hours. Burning for shorter periods may prevent a full melt pool from forming. Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time, as this prevents the glass from overheating, stops excess soot, and keeps the wick stable. Burning for excessively long periods may shorten the overall life of the candle. Think of your candle as a ritual rather than a background object. Give it enough time to perform properly, then allow it to cool before relighting.

Why doesn't my candle smell strong?
A freshly lit candle takes time to release its scent. Fragrance evaporates into the air from the warm liquid wax pool, which usually takes 30 to 60 minutes to fully develop. When a candle is cold, you're mostly experiencing the fragrance oils near the surface. Once the wax begins melting and heat disperses the scent throughout the room, the deeper fragrance notes become more noticeable. This is why a candle's aroma may evolve during a burn and why many complex fragrances reveal different characteristics over time.

Common causes for weak scent throw

  • The wax pool has not yet melted all the way to the edges of the container.
  • The candle was extinguished before the liquid pool spread across the entire surface.
  • A drafty room moves the scent away before it can fill the space.
  • Your nose gets used to the background smell in the room.
  • Soy wax can have a weaker scent throw because it is a natural, denser wax that holds and releases fragrance differently.
